The Facebook Platform Tips & Tricks: Aspect ratios for your images and videos [free template download]

When you create organic posts or Facebook ads for mobile, images and videos should cover as much screen as possible to grab attention. Also, you want to make sure your video/image is responsive on the mobile device, so the viewer has no problem watching it in its entirety no matter how they use the phone or tablet.

Choose the correct aspect ratio that best suits different placements and formats and remember to check which placements support which aspect ratios. Below are some recommended aspect ratios for different placements and formats across the Facebook platform (this includes Instagram too):

  • For feed placements: Recommended - square 1:1 for images and vertical 4:5 for videos.
  • For stories placements: Most people hold their phones vertically so it's recommended to use 9:16 to capture the whole screen.
  • For video carousel format: Recommended - square 1:1 and consistent ratios for all videos in a carousel.
  • For in-stream video: Recommend -  horizontal 16:9 to fit the videos the ads are in.
  • Audience Network placements: Recommend -  vertical 9:16.

  • What is a Facebook/Instagram Feed?
    News Feed is the constantly updating list of stories in the middle of your home page. News Feed includes status updates, photos, videos, links, app activity and likes from people, Pages and groups that you follow on Facebook.
  • What is a Facebook/Instagram Story?
    Stories help you share everyday moments with your friends and business page followers. Stories are only visible for 24 hours, but you can always revisit stories you've shared in your story archive.
  • What is a Carousel format?
    The Carousel format lets you show 2 or more images and/or videos, headlines and links or calls to action in a single post or ad. Anyone who sees your ad can then scroll through the carousel cards by swiping on mobile phones or tablets or by clicking the arrows on a computer screen.
  • What is in-stream Video?
    Facebook in-stream video ads allow you to place ads in video content. Think of the last Facebook video you've watched only to be cut short by a Video ad that you'd most likely watch only to continue with your feed video.
  • What is Audience Network placement?
    Audience Network lets you extend your ad campaigns beyond Facebook to reach your audiences on mobile apps, mobile websites, Instant Articles, and videos.
